One of the best tutorial books out there that can help you with how to apply a look like Avril's is Making Faces by the late Kevin Aucoin. Detailed images and step by step application that works with any make up...he gives you the type of color and tool to use and exactly how to apply. This is the best out there as he was the king of makeup artists as far as I am concerned.
Also if there is a look you are going for celeb wise check out www.makeup411.com and it will break down which products were used on a celeb. in films and videos!
